A mineral that most people had never heard of a decade ago could help reshape the future of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Lithium has become one of the world’s most valuable strategic resources because it is essential for rechargeable batteries used in electric vehicles, smartphones, energy storage systems, and modern technologies.

Now, Congo is preparing to join the ranks of major lithium-producing nations.

At the center of this opportunity is the massive Manono lithium project in Tanganyika Province, widely considered one of the world’s largest hard-rock lithium deposits.

Why Lithium Matters

The global shift toward electric vehicles has created enormous demand for lithium.

Automakers, battery manufacturers, and technology companies are all competing for reliable supplies of the mineral.

As countries move toward cleaner energy systems, demand for lithium is expected to remain strong for years to come.

Congo’s Big Opportunity

For decades, Congo has been known primarily for copper and cobalt production.

Now lithium could become another pillar of the country’s mining sector.

Mining company Zijin Mining and its partners are preparing to launch Congo’s first lithium production from the Manono deposit, marking a historic moment for the country’s mining industry.

The project is expected to produce substantial volumes of lithium materials and could eventually position Congo among the world’s major lithium suppliers.

What Makes Manono Special?

The Manono deposit is regarded as one of the largest undeveloped lithium resources in the world.

Studies suggest the project contains tens of millions of tonnes of lithium-bearing resources, making it one of Africa’s most significant mineral discoveries.

Because of its size, Manono has attracted global attention from investors, mining companies, and governments seeking secure supplies of battery minerals.

Jobs, Investment and Economic Growth

Supporters believe the project could generate:

  • Thousands of direct and indirect jobs
  • New infrastructure investments
  • Increased export revenues
  • Greater foreign investment
  • Opportunities for local businesses

If managed effectively, lithium could help diversify Congo’s economy beyond traditional mining sectors.

Challenges Remain

Despite the optimism, challenges remain.

The project has faced legal disputes involving mining rights and ownership claims. There are also broader questions about environmental protection, community benefits, and ensuring that mining revenues reach ordinary citizens.

Congo’s government has also increased scrutiny of mining revenues in an effort to improve transparency and maximize national benefits from its mineral wealth.

A Turning Point for Congo?

Few countries possess the mineral wealth of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

With world-leading reserves of cobalt, major copper production, and now lithium entering the picture, the country could play an even larger role in the global economy.

The success of the Manono project will depend not only on how much lithium is produced, but also on whether that wealth translates into jobs, infrastructure, and improved living standards.

For Congo, lithium may represent far more than a mineral.

It could become a defining economic opportunity for a new generation.
