Police in Busoga East have identified at least six victims of Tuesday’s fatal boat accident on Lake Victoria.
The incident occurred at around 6pm near Bugoto landing site in Bukabooli Sub-county.
According to Busoga East Police Spokesperson Michael Kasadha, the boat had 14 passengers on board. Eight people were rescued, while six were confirmed dead.
The deceased have been identified as Zalika Naiwumbwe, Badru Gabunga, Faruk Mudoli, Awori Kisakye, Blessing Nabuzale, and one onlyidentified as Rebecca.
Police said Bosco Tibita, Robert Waiswa, Jamira Nandobya, Janet Namwebya, Nabirye Kamyufu, Moses Kapere Moses, and two unidentified children were rescued.
Kasadha said marine police and local responders managed to retrieve survivors and bodies from the water following the capsize.
The rescued victims were rushed to Kigandalo Health Centre IV for medical attention.
Preliminary findings point to overloading as the likely cause of the accident, according to police.
A team of officers led by the Mayuge District OC CID visited and documented the scene as investigations into the incident continue.
Authorities have repeatedly warned lake transport operators against overloading vessels, citing it as a major contributor to fatal accidents on Lake Victoria.
