Comoros President Azali Assoumani Confirms Plan to Hand Power to Son
SHARE

Comoros President Azali Assoumani has publicly stated for the first time that he intends to hand power to his son, General Nour El Fath Azali.

In a televised address, Assoumani, 65, said the transition would ensure “continuity and stability” for the Indian Ocean archipelago. He has ruled Comoros since 2016, after previously serving as president from 1999 to 2006.

The announcement has sparked debate in Moroni. Opposition parties argue the move undermines constitutional term limits and democratic succession. Civil society groups called for wider public consultation before any handover.

Comoros has a history of political instability and coups. Assoumani’s current term ends in 2029. His son currently serves as Secretary General of the Presidency.

The African Union has not commented yet. The plan could set a precedent for dynastic transitions in the region.
