LIST: Did you know we only have 4 “five-star” facilities in Uganda

The Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) has ranked Commonwealth Resort Munyonyo among the only four accommodation facilities in the country to achieve a five-star rating in its latest classification.

The recognition places the Munyonyo-based resort in the top tier of Uganda’s hospitality industry, highlighting its world-class conference facilities, luxury accommodation and wide range of leisure services.

Owned by the Speke Group of Hotels under the Ruparelia Group, the resort is known for hosting major international summits, corporate meetings and high-profile social events. It has the largest conference capacity in East and Central Africa, with 19 conference halls and five outdoor event spaces.

The facility offers 477 rooms in nine categories, five restaurants, two bars and extensive recreation options, making it a leading destination for both business and leisure travellers.

According to UTB, only four hotels met the strict five-star requirements. These are Kampala Serena Hotel, Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort, Sheraton Kampala Hotel and Commonwealth Resort Munyonyo.

The new national grading also rated 17 hotels as four-star, 23 as three-star and 59 as two-star establishments.

Another Speke Group of Hotels property, Kabira Country Club, has been rated a four-star facility. The club offers newly renovated rooms in a quiet, green setting, giving guests a comfortable and relaxing stay.

Other hotels in the four-star category include Four Points by Sheraton Kampala, Hotel Africana, Protea Hotel Kampala Skyz, Bunyonyi Safaris Resort and Mestil Hotel & Residences.

UTB spokesperson John Simplicious Gessa said the classification helps visitors know what level of service to expect and encourages investors to improve standards across the sector.

The assessment follows East African Community guidelines and evaluates facilities based on service quality, infrastructure, staffing, safety, dining standards and overall guest experience. Only licensed and fully operational properties are considered.

UTB says the grading system is intended to strengthen confidence in Uganda’s tourism sector and position the country as a competitive destination in the regional and global market.
