The global art community is mourning the loss of Koyo Kouoh, a trailblazing curator and cultural visionary, whose sudden death at the height of her illustrious career has left a void impossible to fill. Known for her transformative work in contemporary African art and her dedication to fostering cultural dialogue, Kouoh’s passing marks a profound loss for the arts worldwide.

Koyo Kouoh, born in Cameroon in 1967, was renowned for her innovative approach to curatorial practice and her unwavering commitment to elevating African artists on the global stage. She held numerous influential positions, including founding the RAW Material Company in Dakar, Senegal, a multidisciplinary space dedicated to contemporary African art and culture. Under her leadership, RAW Material became a hub for experimental art, critical discourse, and cross-cultural exchange, garnering international recognition and numerous awards.

Her career was distinguished by a series of groundbreaking exhibitions and projects that challenged stereotypes and expanded perceptions of African art. Kouoh’s curatorial philosophy centered on authenticity, inclusivity, and social engagement, making her a pioneering figure who reshaped how African narratives are told through art.

In recent years, Kouoh served as Executive Producer of the acclaimed documentary “The Lost Warrior,” and curated major exhibitions such as “African Perspectives” at prominent institutions worldwide. Her influence extended beyond curating; she was a fierce advocate for artistic freedom and social justice, using her platform to address issues like post-colonial identity, gender equality, and political activism.
