At least six people were killed and seven others critically injured after a passenger bus collided head-on with a Fuso truck carrying charcoal at Kyakabuga Village along the Kiboga–Hoima highway, sparking a fire that engulfed both vehicles.

Emergency teams struggled to contain the blaze and clear the wreckage, while investigations into the cause are ongoing.

The accident occurred around 4am on March 1, 2026, when the bus, registration UBQ 595G, travelling from Kampala to Hoima, collided with the Fuso Fighter truck, registration UBF 541C, coming from the opposite direction.

The impact triggered a fire that completely consumed both vehicles.

Wamala Region Police spokesperson Lameck Kigozi confirmed that six people were killed on the spot.

“Two of the deceased were passengers on the bus, while four were occupants of the Fuso truck. Seven other victims sustained critical injuries and were rushed for medical treatment,” Kigozi said.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital mortuary, while the injured were evacuated to Kikonda Health Centre III for emergency care.

Police identified two of the dead as Gerald Muhumuza, 40, the bus driver from Hoima West Division, and Linongola Matsukizo, a 47-year-old businesswoman of Congolese nationality.

The identities of the four truck occupants had not been established by press time.

Kigozi noted that emergency response teams from Kyankwanzi and Hoima districts, supported by a fire brigade unit from Hoima, managed to put out the blaze and secure the scene.

The wreckage of both vehicles remained at the site as authorities worked to clear the road. Motorists were advised to exercise caution near Kyakabuga, where traffic flow was partially disrupted.

“Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing, and we urge all road users to observe traffic regulations and drive cautiously, especially during early morning hours,” Kigozi added.

Police extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished a quick recovery to those receiving treatment.
